My Role
UX & UI Designer
Scope
Desktop UI Design, Design System Implementation, Page Creation from Scratch
Overview
Medical Codes was a healthcare data platform aimed at streamlining how providers, insurers, and payors manage complex medical reviews and documentation. As part of a collaborative team, I was responsible for designing multiple desktop interfaces from the ground up, using a pre-existing design system to ensure consistency, usability, and clarity across highly data-dense screens.
(WHERE I STARTED)
Problem
The U.S. healthcare system involves multiple stakeholders — from third-party administrators to ACOs — working with intricate and highly regulated data. The challenge was to design interfaces that balanced clarity and functionality for a non-linear, highly complex workflow involving codes, procedures, and prior authorizations.
(MY DESIGN PROCESS)
Process & Approach
Working alongside another designer and a team of developers, I first familiarized myself with the client’s design system and the technical scope. We conducted team walkthroughs of user journeys and backend workflows to understand how real users — including clinicians and case reviewers — would interact with the system.
I then began designing pages from scratch, focusing on:
Modular components that could be reused and adapted across screens
Data-heavy layouts with readable tables, filters, and batch actions
Seamless navigation across nested workflows
Using Figma, I built wireframes and final UIs, implementing logic from the design system and ensuring handoff-readiness for the dev team.
(MY DESIGN IMPACT)
Key Contributions
Designed core UI screens for medical review workflows, including claims view, code assignment, and reviewer dashboard
Used a pre-defined design system while extending patterns where needed to support unique use cases
Created modular layouts for structured tables, filters, tooltips, and multi-step actions
Collaborated cross-functionally to resolve ambiguity between design logic and backend requirements
Advocated for accessibility and clarity within complex layouts to support diverse user needs
(DELIVERING VALUE)
Outcome
Despite the project being discontinued for private reasons, the work resulted in a set of high-fidelity, developer-ready UI files. These designs helped streamline early stakeholder discussions and clarified data workflows that were previously undefined. The experience sharpened my ability to design under constraints, work with evolving requirements, and deliver thoughtful, scalable interfaces for a regulated industry.
(LEARNING IN ACTION)
What This Project Taught Me
Designing for regulated environments like healthcare requires careful attention to detail and process logic
I learned to extend and apply an existing design system while maintaining consistency and usability
Developed confidence in working within a multidisciplinary team, balancing designer–developer collaboration and technical handoffs
Learned how to make complex, technical data more navigable and user-friendly through thoughtful hierarchy and layout
Gained real-world experience building from scratch in a fast-moving, ambiguity-heavy product environment
(HOW I GREW)
Medical Codes was my most complex project to date. It taught me how to bring structure to ambiguity, communicate design decisions clearly, and advocate for usability in a highly technical space. I left the project with a stronger understanding of what it means to design for impact, trust, and precision — qualities I’m excited to bring to collaborative product teams like Pinterest.
